Island Krk – perfect destination for your sun vacation!

Island Krk is the second largest island in the Adriatic Sea and is situated in the north of Croatia, near the city of Rijeka. The island of Krk has everything for a perfect vacation – sun, sea, many beaches, culture, good food, availability of all sorts of activities and beautiful scenery! I was on Krk last September and the weather was beautiful, the sea was warm, there was lots to see and do and I have had delicious meals.

The cuisine is a combination of Italian and Croatian with fresh pasta (called Šurlice), lots of fresh fish and seafood, try the home-made cheeses and locally produced olive oil. There are many beaches on Krk, and you can easily find a nice beach with all kinds of facilities or just a small, quiet secluded beach where you bring your own food and drinks and enjoy the tranquility and the clear blue Adriatic sea.

Krk town with remains from Greek and Roman times is very nice to walk through, there are narrow streets with small shops, restaurants and bars and a beautiful promenade where you can stroll along. On the promenade you can reserve boat trips, you can practice different kinds of watersports, there is a boat with a glass bottom so you can see underwater, and there are nice restaurants with stunning views over the sea.

If you are on Krk it’s also nice to pay a visit to the monastery on the small island Košljun in the bay near the town of Krk, you go by boat to the green island where you can see all in about an hour, before you sail back again.

The town of Baška with its beautiful long pebble beach “Vela Plaza” is a good vacation spot, the beach is perfect for small children, you can sunbathe and there is plenty to see. It is the most famous town on the island of Krk and is even in the top 10 tourist destinations on the Adriatic coast. Furthermore, you can make trips to the nearby ruins of a 11th century castle, called ‘Stari Grad’, with a Romanesque church from 1723 – if it’s not too hot you can take a nice walk around here. A bit further on, in the village Jurandvor the St. Lucia church holds a copy of the original Baškastone – this is the oldest Croatian document in Glagolitic script!

» The island is known for the Glagolitic script, an ancient Croatian script with beautiful and special characters. Large stone images of these letters are scattered around the island, look for your own initials!

» Don’t confuse the island of Krk with the beautiful Croatian naturepark Krka!

» The island is easily accessible by car via a short toll bridge

» From the island Krk, you can reach other islands by ferry, like the islands Cres and Losinj
