Island Pag

The island is best known for it's world renowned Sheep's Cheese 'Paski sir'!

The island Pag is known for its sheep, their cheese, the clear blue water and handmade lace. It is overlooked by the large Velebit mountain range on the continent, has a rough, stone and rock like exterior encircled by the clear blue Adriatic sea. Due to the constant wind the vegetation is minimal on the east side of the island, on the west side are some low growing shrubs and many aromatic herbs that are a diet for the sheep that are held here. The landscape has characteristic small stone walls to break the wind and to keep the sheep on their pastures.
The island is a perfect place for water sport and wind surfing, due to the constant wind and low waves, there are many sandy beaches. There is plenty of culture to discover on the island and the island is known for it’s endless summer parties which attracts many young people.

The small town of Pag is located in a protected bay, already in 1244 Pag obtained it’s city rights from King Bela IV, but the town has been destroyed in subsequent wars. A long time Pag was under Venetian rule and the Venetians have build the current town of Pag and there are still many buildings and a church from that era. The last weekend in July a Summer carnival is organized, with local products, promotion of the local culture and many more activities and music .

The island of Pag has some very good beaches for families to enjoy a perfect beach holiday. Some of the best beaches are:

Beach Strasko in Novalja; the beach is sandy with pebbles, the sea bottom has pebbles, the beach is about 2 km long. This beach is located near the camp site ‘Strasko’ in a bay with view to the open sea, surrounded by a pine forest that provides a pleasant cooling shade in the summer. There are plenty of recreational facilities like; beach volleyball, pedal boats, canoe’s, jet ski’s and activities for children. This beach has a blue flag.

Another famous Beach near Novalja is ‘Zrce. This is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Croatian coast. There are many things to do on this beach like jet skiing and you can hire sun-deck chairs and umbrellas. There are a lot of bars and clubs along this beach and in the evening this is the centre of night entertainment, beach parties and lots of music.

Beach Planjka near the town of Stara Novalja  is a great beach for families with children, a nice pebble beach and it also has a blue flag.

City beach Prosika in the town of Pag has a blue flag and a great sandy beach ideal for families with small children. Due to its location in Pag there are many bars and restaurants and many sport facilities nearby.

The island can be reached by car from Zadar, and by ferry from Prizna on the main coast to Zigljen on Pag.
