Cycling is a popular sport in Croatia which is evident in an ever increasing number of bicycle shops, bikes-for-rent, signposted cycling trails, mobile and GPS applications. The cycling trails often lead over asphalt roads, of-the-road and/or gravel roads ‘makadam’.
Croatia is an ideal cycling country, due to its moderate climate with lots of sunshine, little rainfall. You can choose form moderate cycling trails along rivers in the north-east, along hillsides throughout the interior and more challenging trails through more mountainous areas.
Take your bike with you or rent-a-bike in one of the tourist town or at the place that you stay, inform ahead of your stay about availability and price; usually about 10-20 euro/day depending on how many days you plan to hire the bike.
Make all day cycling trips, or just enjoy a moderate cycling tour through a nice nature area. In the months of July and August temperatures rise to above 30C making strenuous activity, except for along swim in the sea, not advisable for most people.
You can usually take your bike with you on the train and ferry, for a small price, unfortunately these websites are not available in the English language.
Some practical notes: during cycling you are only allowed to use your mobile phone hands-free, it is obliged by law to wear a fluorescent vest during the dark, you must have good working lights, children until the age of 15 years must wear a helmet. Take enough food and drink with you if you plan to make a day trip, especially in the interior, where some areas are thinly populated.
Enjoy you cycling trips in beautiful and surprising Croatia!
