With a magnificent view on the capitol of Croatia the city Zagreb. Medvedgrad Castle was built on order from Pope Innocent IV in the 13th century to ward off Tatar invasions. Ideally located on a high peak of the southern slope of Medvednica Mountain, Medvedgrad had a great position to observe the area stretching from Medvednica in the north to Turopolje in the south and from the west to the east. The castle was completed in 1254, it was build with double walls, a moat and it had two towers, furthermore there was a residential palace, a chapel and a cistern, the complex thus provided excellent defence, great overview of the area and a home. The ownership of Medvedgrad have changed over the history from Croatian and Hungarian kings, bishops of Zagreb to noblemen. An earthquake has hit the area on 15th September 1590 and all but destroyed Medvedgrad.
A part of the castle is renovated and offers great views over the capital Zagreb and is great to combine with a visit to Sljeme, the top of the mountain Medvednica.
