The Castle of Ozalj is very old and dates from the 12th century. It is situated on a cliff above the river Kupa so it could be watched over. When the threat of the Osman Turks has receded a village developed around the castle. Nowadays, there still can be seen two walls and five half round towers,a more recent addition is a 16th century granary for the stock of grain dedicated to the history of the Castle and surroundings and has a library with glagolitic scripts.
From 1244 the castle was owned by the Croatian king, and then it was owned by several prominent families: Babonić, Frankopan, Zrinski, Perlas, Batthyany and Thurn & Taxis, the latter gave the castle in 1928 to the current owners, “Brothers of the Croatian Dragon “. The castle is reached by a wooden bridge that until 1821 was movable. The central pillar of the bridge used to be a watchtower, whose small holes were used by archers to defend the city. The pillar is also very interesting from an architectural point of view, since the lower part is built like a triangle, while the upper part is built as a square.
