National park Paklenica

Splendid mountain climbing area!

A steep mountain area that rises along the Adriatic sea. It is the southern part of the Velebit mountain range with beautiful wild and rough nature. There are some walking trails, but this National park is excellent for real mountaineering and mountain climbing.

There are four educational trails, several cycling trails, mountain huts and shelters.

1) Velika Paklenica Educational Trail, is the most visited trail in the park leading from Velika Paklenica Canyon to the Mountain hut. The track has 10 educational panels providing information on the natural features of NP Paklenica and cultural features of the area.
2) Paklarić Educational Trail, runs along along the left bank of the stream not far from the reception. The entrance to the trail is marked by panels. The educational trail begins at the old, renovated Paklenica Mill and leads to the Paklarić Fort, and the belvedere provides a panoramic view. The trail is 550 meters long and equipped with four information boards.
3) Educational Trail “A Short Journey through History” and the Starigrad – Reljani Bike Trail. The eight km long bike and pedestrian trail leads from the centre of Starigrad – Paklenica to the reception in Velika Paklenica, through old villages all the way to Seline.
4) Educational Trail Pjeskarica, stretches from Paklenica Mill to the car park in the Canyon, along the east bank of the creek. The 1,500 m long trail leads you through an area of diverse relief forms and lush vegetation.

At Paklenica climbing site, mostly composed of limestone, there are about 400 well-equipped marked routes of different difficulty grade and length (from grade 3 to 8b+).

1) Most short sport climbing routes are situated in Klanci, the narrowest part of the Velika Paklenica canyon. The routes are easily accessible and therefore suitable for climbers with small children.
2) The Crljenica sector is most suitable and especially interesting for climbing in the winter.
3) The most famous rock for climbing in Paklenica is Anića kuk, with various routes up to 350 meters long – from unequipped and aid routes to modern, long, sport routes.
4) Many other long routes in the rocks of Debeli kuk, Veliki ćuk, Kuk od Skradelin and Kukovi ispod Vlake are also attractive for climbers.

The main climbing season in Paklenica begins in spring and lasts until late autumn. Many climbers gather here around May 1, for the International Climbers’ Meeting, and they take part in various events and competitions.

In 1949 the area’s of big (velika) and small (mala) Paklenica were proclaimed as national park to protect their unique natural features, geological structure, and the largest and well-preserved forest area threatened by over-exploitation.

Characteristic features of Paklenica National Park are forests of pine trees, several types of beech forests and deep canyons with torrent flows of Velika and Mala Paklenica. The wider area of Paklenica National Park prides itself with a rich and diverse cultural heritage.
