The Pazin Abyss in Istria is legally protected as significant landscape, and the protected area comprises the canyon and the abyss of the Pazincica, about 500 meters long and about 100 meters deep, and the Pazin Cave.
There is an educational walking path of about long 1300 m that starts on the bridge Vršic nearby the Pazin Castle and leads you through the beautiful natural canyon until you reach the banks of the river Pazincica where you start a gentle winding climb up to the so-called Pyramid lookout and on to the terrace of Hotel Lovac, where you can admire the stunning panorama. Along the path are signs and notice boards written in different foreign languages where you can learn more on erosion, hydrography, the flora of the abyss, legends, research and explorers.
The underground sightseeing is included in the route but, in case of favourable weather conditions along with a timely notification, it can be organized with the necessary guide of the local cavers. In order to have a guide you need to contact the ‘Speleološko društvo Istra’ – The association of Istrian cavers.
Note: It is strictly forbidden and also dangerous to walk outside the marked paths, as well as to go down to the stream-bed of the river and the abyss hatch!
