Castle Veliki Tabor

Late medieval and renaissance castle

Castle Veliki Tabor, Croatia

Veliki Tabor is a fortified castle located on a hill near a small village in North Croatia. In recent years much effort has been made in some excellent renovations works. The castle now houses several exhibitions about it’s rich history and there are many artefacts presented.

Veliki Tabor Castle is one of the most important cultural and historical fortifications in continental Croatia. The castle is elegantly positioned at the top of Mount Hum Košnički, at 333 meters above sea level, beautifully incorporated in the local environment. Due to it’s unique position the panoramic view from the Castle stretches over a large area and even into neighbouring Slovenia.
The exact time when the castle was build is still uncertain, but the start of its build ranges somewhere between 1450 and 1502. The centre of this fortified pentagonal castle is the oldest and its style belongs to the Late Gothic period. The Castle is encircled by so-called curtained walls and has four Renaissance towers and has several additional buildings.

Initially the castle was primarily used for housing, but in time more and more fortifications and defensive walls were erected. The castle has a nice courtyard with galleries running along every floor, which have Tuscan pillars and arches in Renaissance style.

There is the opportunity to have a guided tour in Croatian or English language. The Castle and Museum is closed on Mondays and the following holidays: 1st January, Easter Sunday, 1st of November, 25th and 26th of December.
