Croatia maybe doesn’t pop up in your thoughts as a place for winter sport as it is best known for it’s summertime sunshine and great beaches. However, Croatia has to offer some winter sport areas. And as there are plenty of high mountain regions and the interior of Croatia has a land climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters it is a great destination for a winter holiday!
Yesterday evening it has been snowing for some time and a large part of the country is covered in a nice white blanket of about 20 cm of fresh snow. Visit a nature park in wintertime for great walks through a snowy landscape, followed by a glass of glühwein!
The ski resort ‘Sljeme’ is located on the mountain top of the Medvednica mountain directly north of the Croatian capital Zagreb. In just 20 minutes by car you are at the ski-resort where each winter season skiing competitions are held, of which the best known is the FIS World Ski Cup competition. Here you can go skiing and snowboarding on about 4km of slopes, there are three lifts and the elevation of the area is about 730 – 1.030 meter. The slopes and lifts are located on the northern side of the mountain, there are red, green, blue and white slopes and there are snow-making facilities in case of low precipitation. Another ski-resort is in the Gorski Kotar mountain region in ski resort ‘Platak’. Here there about 5km of slopes for skiing and snowboarding, with 5 lifts. This winter sport area is situated at an elevation of 1.100 – 1.363 meter. The blue slopes are 3,2 km and the red slope 1,8 km long.
