National park Krka is located near the village of Skradin, some 20 km from the coastal town Sibenik in Dalmatia and easily accessible by car, but there are also bus and boat excursions to Krka from Sibenik. A gorgeous national park with waterfalls and several beautiful trails over wooden walkways through the woods and along and across the river Krka and its waterfalls.
During the summer months it is allowed to go swimming at marked locations at the “Skradinski buk” and “Roški slap” waterfalls, and boat trips along the river are organised.
On January 24th NP Krka celebrated it’s 32nd birthday!
The source of the beautiful karst river Krka is near the city of Knin, under the Topoljski waterfall and the river flows 72.5 km to the Adriatic Sea near the coastal town of Sibenik. Krka is fed by five tributaries: Krcic, Kosovcica, Orašnica, Butišnica and Cikola along with the river Vrba and has a total of seven waterfalls. Through the ongoing process of deposition from natural limestone (travertine) steps or cascades are formed that result in waterfalls – it is an invaluable natural karst phenomenon .
Travertine is the name for calcium carbonate (limestone), which precipitates in the water at rapids on uneven surfaces such as submerged logs. Travertine is used for centuries in construction, travertine is used in building the Colosseum in Rome and the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam.
