Visit Dubrovnik on your vacation to Croatia

The 67th Dubrovnik Summer Festival begins on July 10 with an opening ceremony at 21:00 in front of the church of St. Blaise ending with a grand firework – the festival continues until August 25! At twenty locations in the city performances of mainly classical music are given by 2000 various artists from all over the world.

Dubrovnik is the perfect vacation destination! It has much to offer in terms of sun, beaches, resorts, history, culture and it is even a film location of the hit TV series Game of Thrones!

Dubrovnik is situated in the south of Croatia along the beautiful blue Adriatic sea. Throughout the year, this UNESCO town is a perfect holiday destination, it has a Mediterranean climate and also in spring and autumn it is warm and sunny. The old town is free of traffic, and is a lovely town to stroll through, visit the churches and museums and of course take a walk on the beautiful old city wall with plenty of photo-opportunities. You can try the delicious local food, walk through the narrow streets and look for souvenirs in the small shops, walk along the main street ‘Stradun‘ and enjoy an ice cream.

The ‘Stradun’ is a 300 m long street which connects the western city gate the “Pile Gate” (Vrata od Pila) to the eastern city gate, the “Ploče Gate” (Vrata od Ploča). Near these old city-gates you can also find 15th century fountains and two bell towers – the large Large Onofrio’s Fountain in the west and the small Onofrio’s Fountain in the east of the street. Take a walk over the city wall late in the afternoon as in the summer times it is rather hot and there is no shade – the rest of the year it is perfect to go during the day.

Game of Thrones filming locations

At various locations in and around Dubrovnik recordings were made for the popular television series ‘Game of Thrones’. There are organized walks along and through these locations, but you can also search for them yourself. Some of these places are St. Dominic Street, Fort Lovrijenac, Fort Bokar, Knežev dvor / castle, Sponza Palace, and Minčeta tower. Just outside Dubrovnik filming locations were the beautiful island of Lokrum, which you can reach in about 10 minutes by boat from the old harbour, and the beautiful arboretum Trsteno on the coast just north of Dubrovnik.

Around Dubrovnik

Also near Dubrovnik, there is plenty to do and see. There are in the region many hotels, resorts and campings it is ideal if you have a car available, but also by bus you can travel to the various places aroudn Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik has its own airport, where you can also rent cars which is also a good option.

The pretty fishing village of Cavtat south of Dubrovnik offers beautiful resorts, a small port, a beautiful clear blue sea and lots of green surroundings! In the mountainous hinterland with beautiful high cypresses, you can still find authentic villages and restaurants and also some walking and cycling routes, but in summer it is too hot to be active during the day – better to enjoy the sea and beaches of south Dalmatia!

A visit to the Peljesac peninsula and the island of Korcula is highly recommended, see the old wall and salt production in Ston, sample fine wines and dishes with fish and seafood and enjoy the beautiful beaches. Here you can find more campsites than near Dubrovnik, and Dubrovnik is easily accessible by car, there is only a very limited amount of parking spaces near the old centre, there are also regular bus fares from places around Dubrovnik to the old town.
